Celebrating the Honey BeeEvery year, the Nature Fest Planning Committee chooses a sub-theme for the festival. This year we’ve chosen to celebrate the Honey Bee! Below are few facts that helped in our decision to highlight the Honey Bee:
· Honey Bees enable the production of at least 90 commercially grown crops in North America. · Pollinators contribute more than 24 billion dollars to the US economy, of which Honey Bees account for more than 15 billion dollars through their vital role in keeping fruits, nuts, and vegetables in our diet. · The number of managed Honey Bee colonies in the US has declined steadily over the past 60 years, from 6 million colonies in 1947 to 2.5 million today. · A phenomenon called colony collapse disorder (a rapid, unexpected, and catastrophic loss of bees in a hive), is being caused by a combination of stressors, including loss of natural forage, inadequate diets, mite infestations and diseases, loss of genetic diversity, and exposure to certain pesticides *Source: White House Press Secretary Honey Bee Workshop Schedule*Honey Bee workshops are located at the Pine Tree Stage!
